Job Summary
New Horizon Special School, located in Accra, Ghana, is seeking a passionate and experienced Special Education Teacher to join our team. The successful candidate will specialize in teaching students with learning disabilities, tailoring educational plans to meet each student’s unique needs. This role involves creating an inclusive learning environment that fosters academic, social, and emotional development. The candidate should be committed to enhancing the lives of students through individualized instruction and collaboration with a multidisciplinary team.

Job Description/Requirements

Key Responsibilities:

  • Assess the individual learning abilities of students and adapt the curriculum to accommodate their needs.
  • Design and implement Individualized Education Plans (IEPs) for each student, setting measurable goals.
  • Monitor and assess student progress regularly, adjusting teaching strategies as needed to meet learning objectives.
  • Create a positive, inclusive classroom environment that encourages participation and growth.
  • Collaborate with support staff such as Physical Therapists, Speech Therapists, and Counselors to develop comprehensive learning and developmental plans for each student.
  • Implement interventions and behavioral strategies to support students with emotional and social challenges.
  • Regularly communicate with parents/guardians regarding the student’s progress and areas of improvement.
  • Maintain records of student development, behavior, and performance for use in reporting and evaluating.
  • Encourage students to develop critical life skills and independence, promoting their overall well-being.

Requirements:

  • Proven experience as a Special Education Teacher or in a similar role.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Education or a related field; a Master’s or Ph.D. is an advantage.
  • Specialized training in Special Education or working with children with learning disabilities is essential.
  • Patient, compassionate, and adaptable personality, capable of handling diverse learning challenges.
  • Strong collaboration skills, with the ability to work effectively in a team environment.
  • Proficient in evaluating progress and adapting instructional techniques accordingly.
  • Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written, to engage with students, staff, and parents effectively.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Certification or training in special education programs, such as ABA or Montessori for children with special needs, is a plus.
  • Knowledge of therapeutic strategies such as speech therapy, occupational therapy, or physical therapy.
  • Experience in conducting behavioral assessments and implementing intervention plans.
